    About the Carbon Quest Initiative: Crossing the “Death Valley” of Climate Innovation

    The Carbon Quest Initiative is a landmark global initiative launched by Tencent, whose core mission targets the most daunting challenge in climate technology innovation—the “Death Valley.” Many cutting-edge technologies achieve breakthroughs in laboratories but struggle to bridge the critical gap from “paper” to “application” due to insufficient funding, resources, and real-world testing environments, ultimately failing to reach maturity. This initiative was established precisely to bridge this gap between early R&D and large-scale deployment, accelerating the growth and development of next-generation climate technologies essential for achieving net-zero targets by 2050.

    To tangibly assist innovative teams in crossing the “Valley of Death,” the Carbon Seek Initiative builds a comprehensive enabling ecosystem that goes beyond mere financial support. The program provides catalytic funding totaling up to RMB 200 million (approximately USD 28 million), while also integrating valuable technical resources, top-tier expert guidance, and access to global pilot sites in climate-vulnerable regions such as Kenya, the Maldives, and Serbia for selected teams. This suite of support aims to provide cutting-edge technologies with a complete pathway from laboratory to real-world application, validating their feasibility and accelerating their commercialization.

    As Lin Jinghua, Senior Vice President of Tencent, stated: “The climate crisis is a severe challenge facing our era, requiring both bold innovation and coordinated global ecosystem action.” This encapsulates the core philosophy of the Carbon Quest Initiative—it is not merely a funding platform, but a global innovation ecosystem that brings together scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, investors, and industry leaders. By investing in breakthrough ideas and creating pathways to transform them into real-world solutions, the initiative is uniting diverse forces to lay the foundation for a truly low-carbon future.

    Sipeng Technology: Transforming Carbon into Treasure Through Innovative Technology

    Founded in 2022, Sipeng Technology stands as the world's sole enterprise capable of directly utilizing CO₂ to synthesize polylactic acid (PLA) through a one-step process within living cells. This breakthrough technology promises to overcome the existing bottlenecks of bio-based materials competing with food and land resources for cultivation, while significantly reducing production costs. It represents one of China's rare negative-carbon green production technologies with fully independent intellectual property rights.

    Among the four key areas of the CarbonX Initiative, Sipeng Technology's entry into the CarbonXmade track stands out. This domain focuses on transforming captured carbon dioxide into high-value products, building a circular economy that turns waste into resources.

    This pioneering initiative proposes an innovative framework integrating carbon-negative synthetic biology with digital twin systems to establish a sustainable carbon conversion value platform. The research project will systematically develop dual-output biological production systems that simultaneously synthesize two bio-based products from CO₂ feedstock, advancing carbon reduction through three synergistic pathways: direct emissions reduction, biological carbon sequestration, and fossil resource substitution. The implementation strategy comprises three coordinated phases:

    1) Utilizing synthetic biology tools to construct modular microbial communities, creating self-regulating cellular factories for efficient direct conversion of CO₂ into bio-products;

    2) Designing optimized photobioreactor systems via physically informed digital twin technology, enabling real-time simulation of mass transfer and metabolic flux dynamics;

    3) Integrating AI-guided photosynthetic cultivation with anaerobic fermentation technologies to establish scalable bioindustrial production processes.

    This systems biotechnology approach aims to transform the carbon management paradigm by creating circular production systems that convert industrial emissions into commercially viable biomaterials while achieving a net negative carbon footprint through biological carbon sequestration mechanisms.

    The PLA Polylactic Acid Yogurt Fiber T-Shirt, jointly developed by Shanghai Sipeng Technology Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, represents a cutting-edge green technology product born from the integration of industry, academia, and research. Its core material—polylactic acid fiber—is derived from renewable plants like corn and cassava, or byproducts of dairy products such as yogurt, fundamentally reducing dependence on petroleum resources. Beyond offering a premium wearing experience—featuring skin-friendly softness, moisture-wicking breathability, and natural antibacterial/anti-mite properties—this T-shirt boasts a closed-loop eco-design. It achieves full biodegradability through industrial composting, ultimately decomposing into carbon dioxide and water under specific conditions. This effectively eliminates microplastic pollution associated with conventional synthetic fabrics. As a model of biotechnology empowering sustainable fashion, it integrates environmental consciousness with technological innovation into everyday wear.

    These products vividly embody the “Carbon Seek Manufacturing” philosophy. They not only reflect Sipeng Technology's pursuit of technical excellence but also carry our shared vision with Tencent's “Carbon Seek Initiative”: to build a circular future where waste becomes resource, ensuring every great climate innovation ultimately integrates into daily life for everyone to enjoy.
